January 2016

Message from the President:

Greetings for the start of 2016!

It has been a while since the last newsletter. Your ASM Officers were busy during the fall, working on a number of improvements to the general operations of the society. I’m happy to report that the society is running smoothly as we begin the New Year. Of course there is always more that we can and should be doing to improve ASM and to promote understanding of mammals, so I expect things to remain busy this year.

As we head in to 2016, a few updates:

That should get your attention … for our student members, the deadlines for applying for ASM’s multiple research grants and Honoraria are fast approaching. To make it easier to identify the different funding options that are available, the Chairs of the relevant committees have put together a new, centralized web page that lists all of the available awards and provides links to more detailed, award-specific sources of information…check it out at http://www.mammalsociety.org/grants

Many of these awards now use the same centralized, online application system. For these awards, applications can be submitted from 15 January to 1 March. This shared submission system should make things easier but please use the links on the central information page to check the guidelines and submission instructions for the specific award(s) that you are considering.

This is also the time of year when we have the opportunity to recognize outstanding more experienced colleagues by nominating them for our senior awards (the Grinnell, Jackson, Leopold and Merriam Awards). The Chairs of the relevant committees have agreed upon a common deadline of 1 March for submission of nominations for these awards. Please see the specific web page for each committee for detailed information regarding the scope of each award and the requirements for submitting nominations. The Chairs of these committees request your help in identifying deserving recipients for these awards!

It’s not too early to starting thinking about our next annual meeting, which will be held 24-28 June, 2016, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis-St. Paul. The Program Committee has been working hard to put together an exciting line up of workshops, symposia, and other activities for the meeting. Now, it’s time for all of you to bring the great science and community that really makes our meetings special!

Meeting information is available online at http://www.mammalsociety.org/meetings and http://conferences.k-state.edu/mammalogists/. Registration for the 2016 meeting is now open – rates go up on 1 April, so don’t wait to commit … go ahead and register now and help us make 2016 a great meeting experience!

This newsletter has focused on reminders about upcoming ASM deadlines and events, with the intent of getting everyone thinking about our Society as we start a new year. The past months have seen plenty of exciting advances in the science of mammalogy and I encourage you to check out the ASM website, our Facebook page, and the Journal of Mammalogy to get caught up on these aspects of mammalian biology. And, of course, I encourage you to come join the discussions about our favorite clade of animals when we get together in Minneapolis in June.

Best wishes for 2016,

Eileen A. Lacey, ASM President
